Saunas Precautions

Saunas render the wide range of benefits:

- It is a great work-out for your cardiovascular system.
- It is a perfect deep-cleansing cure for the body.
- It is a good immune system booster.
- It is an excellent soothing and invigorating refreshment for the mind.

In spite of all these benefits there are some precautions which you have to remember. The first one and probably the most important is that saunas are not recommended for people with heart disease or any other cardiovascular problems. People that suffer from high blood pressure should first see their doctor.

- You have to make sure that you have enough time.
- It would be polite from your side to take a quick shower before entering the sauna.
- Use a little towel to sit on the saunas bench.
- Temperatures in the sauna can range from 180 to 212 degrees Fahrenheit (80-100 degrees Celsius).
- Regulate the humidity by throwing water on the heater.
- In the sauna you can “whip” yourself or your friends with a bundle of birch branches. Birch leaves disgorge saponines to move dirt from the skin, the resins and essential oils cure the skin gratefully, the tannins create a protective film on cuts, the sugar adds suppleness, and phenols disinfect the skin. “Whipping” stimulates the skin's blood circulation, and also fills the sauna with a pleasant, fresh smell.
- Do not be in the sauna more than 10-15 minutes.
- Drink lots of water before and after the sauna. This will help you to replace lost fluids. The sweat glands can secrete up to 30 grams of sweat per minute, or almost one pint per 15 minutes, so dehydration is quite possible if you are not careful. Fatigue and other signs of dehydration can occur with as little as 1 to 2% loss in body weight.
- When you have warmed yourself up, go cool off for a while. The top of the enjoyment is to take a cool shower or plunge into a nearby lake. Some really brave individuals can roll in the snow in the winter.
- Return to the heat according to your liking.
- Finish by washing yourself then rinsing yourself clean. Rest a while and enjoy a refreshing drink.
- Get on your clothes only after the sweating has completely stopped.
- Leave the sauna in a tidy condition.
- Don’t eat heavy meals and don’t drink alcohol before the sauna.
